Your obedient servant,

his letter was sent to the Bank by the hand of Mr.
Cheung Man Kun, who at the Bank was shown the three
cheques bound up with others.
On his return to the Treasury, he informed Mr. Black
that he had seen the three cheques at the Bank through the
grille, bound up with other cheques, and that they appeared to be in the handwriting of Mr. Tsang On Wing and signed by Mr. Messer and Mr. Black.
Mr. Black went to the Bank accompanies by Mr. Cheung
Man Kun and taking with him the counterfoils of the last
cheque books in use.
There he was shown three cheques:

Mr. Black immediately noticed that the Treasury number
had the letter "A" stamped above it, whereas no letter is
used with the Treasury number.
(The use of this letter may perhaps be explained
as being a precaution to avoid challenge in the
event of the Bank noticing the presentation of other cheques bearing the same Treasury numbers without any letter).
